The 2nd Annual Sensational Smiles Social will be held on Saturday, story unhealthy April 16, ambulance 7:00-9:00PM at The Crowe Gallery, 13 S. Main Street in Cape Girardeau. The cost is $10 and includes food and drink as well as a Silent Auction. A short program will highlight our Dental Screening Program and recognize numerous community volunteers and dental professionals who make our screenings possible.
All money raised from this event goes to our Dental Treatment Scholarship program which assists disadvantaged youth with their dental needs. Last year’s event raised almost $2000. Those funds helped eight youth in our community.
For the 2010-2011 school year, 4245 students were screened in 27 schools and 2676 students received fluoride varnish applications. In addition, 532 preschool youth in 20 daycares were screened and 529 youth received fluoride varnish. Those numbers have been increasing since the program officially started in 2008.
For the 2009-2010 school year, Cape Girardeau County was second in the state for the number of youth screened in school and daycare settings. Thanks go to Dorothy Gholson, our Oral Health Coordinator, and to the 69 community volunteers (32 dental professionals and 37 lay people) who actually do the work at the screening events.
